| Abstract | This paper deals with the conflicts between the religious dance groups and the Catholic Church regarding the mandas performed by the dancers in the Catholic feast of La Tirana (Northern Chile). Following the introduction –in which the problem is briefly defined– we provide a description of La Tirana’s celebration (section 2), placing it in regional historical processes of the 19th and 20th centuries, and contextualizing the national construction of the territories where it takes place. The third section is devoted to portraying the significance of the mandas for believers and showing how the mandas are defined in the Catholic Church’s official discourse. In section 4 we analyze the mandas according to Durkheimian categories, explaining the concepts of religiosity that are in conflict when the dance groups and the Catholic Church defend different positions regarding the use of the body. |
