| Abstract | Introduction Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands became independent country in 1975 and 1979, respectively. As both countries hurry the modernization, indigenous agriculture will be lost gradually. It seems that the records of indigenous agriculture in these countries are useful for both underdeveloping and developed countries. Our research project focuses on the purpose of utilization of various kinds of indigenous crops for understanding the close dependence of human life on cultivated flora from both bio and human ecological stand points. In our research of Papua New Guinea, making the survey of crops was done in subsistence gardens and native markets under the two traditional ways of land use. One is lowland shifting cultivation based on banana, and the other is shifting cultivation based on sweet potato (Fig.1). In the coastal and lowland regions the subsistence is based on shifting cultivation of bananas, taros and yams. in the highland regions the subsistence is based on shifting cultivation of sweet potato. The origin of edible banana in Australimusa series, is in this district. On the other hand, the origin of cultivated sweet potato is Mexico10~, and it is said that sweet potato had been introduced to Papua New Guinea in the sixteeth century3~, and it replaced the traditional crops of taro and yam in relatively short time in highland regions.
