| Abstract | This study was conducted in order to develop a net energy system that can be incorporated into a dynamic pig growth model. This new energy system should be able to simulate the effect of the physiologic state of the pig and of the nutrient composition of foodstuffs on the efficiency of energy utilisation. In the proposed system, the energetic contribution of the diet is defined by three digestible nutrients that are digestible protein, digestible lipids and digestible fibres, and also by total starch and sugars. The energy of these nutrients is directed toward three metabolic functions or is lost in the urine, in the gas or as heat. The metabolic functions considered are maintenance, and protein and lipid retentions. Before their metabolic utilisation, some nutrients are transformed into intermediate products, which can be glucose-equivalent and/or volatile fatty acid. The parameters of the model are estimated with a non-linear algorithm or from literature data. The model is validated in regards to the quality of its predictions, of the pertinence of its complexity, compared with a digestible energy based model and in regard to its stability when it is challenged by different simulation conditions. Compared to the net energy systems actually used, the system proposed here takes into account, not only the composition of the diet, but also the final metabolic destination of nutrients, which has never been done yet. |
