| Abstract | This essay analyzes the old tension between authoritarianism and democracy in Latin America from the recent history of Argentina and Brazil, trying to understand how coups d’Etat occurred, resulting from processes of legitimization of democratically constituted governments by broad social alliances and not just military, which would install dictatorial regimes whose internal vicissitudes can be understood through this lens, which is equally useful in understanding the process of re-democratization, which, despite passing through difficult trances, could solve them in accordance with constitutional means introducing a long period which has already been a quarter century but still needs to be accountable to much of the past. |
