| Abstract | Breakthroughs in technology and mass media have a vital effect in the redefinition of the objectives to teach reading and writing either in a mother tongue or in any other foreign language. The 21 st Century Skills Organization describes the essential abilities which are necessary to build successful professionals. Technological and digital literacies, the development of critical thinking and communicative skills and the acquisition of foreign languages are, among others, some of the skills that students are expected to use to be able to be part of the contemporary work force or academic world. The purposes of this paper are to re-define the concept of literacy in the 21 st century and to introduce the abilities in which secondary school and college or university students should be prepared to deal with through the use of digital tools to teach reading and writing. We also aim at showing how our teaching practice should always be updated to re-signify ‘literacy’ in the 21 st century. The use of ICTs in the classroom fosters the development of digital competence, complex cognitive processes and a rhetorical awareness, and it also presents a great opportunity for a multimedia dialogue which characterises our modern society. |
