| Abstract | This article aims to understand the concepts and practices of women with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the context of Primary Health Care. The methodology used is qualitative character, and interviewed 15 women with DM seen at the Health Centre in the city of Belo Horizonte, in June 2010, through a semistructured interview. The theoretical reference was the theory of social representations. Recorded and transcribed records were submitted to thematic content analysis. The data indicate that the time of diagnosis and living with a medical professional to monitor diabetes, women did not provide a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease. This lack of guidance from the health service is manifested by the women interviewed as they relate mainly to food and disease management seen claiming not to know what can or can not be done. Daily management of feeding seems to be, well, the main impact of illness on the lives of women with diabetes. |
