| Abstract | ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have to acknowledge the many people who have contributed in various ways to this work. The first of these is my girl friend Lara, to whom I forever indebted for giving up of her professional career in Portugal to live with me in Nashville for the past semester. She gave me the love, encouragement and confidence for completing this work. I also want to thank my parents for their love and support. It is safe to say that without them I would have never gained the self-confidence for this undertaking. I am especially grateful to my advisor, Gabor Karsai who guided me through this work by providing me with plenty of hints and advice and explaining them to me with great patience.
