| Abstract | This work is the product of an investigation called Familia y privación de la libertad (Families and Deprivation of Liberty) carried out during the years 2014 and 2015 by the research team on prison and jail matters affiliated with the Instituto Rosarista de Acción Social –SERES–. The aim of this research was to establish the impacts of deprivation of liberty on families and family dynamics from legal, economic, psychological, and social points of view, based on the perceptions and personal experiences of people deprived of their personal liberty in addition to some of their family members. Based on the information gathered in the field, the team established a conception of family not as a rigid structure, but as a flexible structure that may take on a diverse set of forms. The study proposes a typology for families that include individuals who have been deprived of their liberty. It presents its findings on the effects of family separation and describes manners of adapting to different such situations. It also offers practical and specific recommendations to limit the negative impacts of these risk factors. |
