| Abstract | Nowadays one can see that the labor and childbirth scenarios have become increasingly institutionalized and medicalized, being addressed as a pathological process. As a consequence, women are being inserted in a system where their role on the labor process is often replaced by the role of follower of rules and routines of the institutions. It is known that the nursing staff is the most active professional in this scenario, also being responsible for the care and attention in pregnancy and childbirth. The World Health Organization established the Manual “Care in normal birth: a practical guide”, establishing good delivery and birth care practices, which has contributed to an assistance based on scientific evidence. Know the conceptions and perceptions of the nursing staff regarding best practices in childbirth and birth, was the purpose of this study, which was to approach a study of qualitative approach, descriptive exploratory. The results of the study were divided into four categories as follows: Category 1 Prenatal’s Assistance and its effects on decision-making in labor and delivery; Category 2 Labor’s and Delivery’s Assistance; Category 3 Newborns’ Assistance; Category 4 Views / Difficulties and possibilities from the perspective of the nursing staff. In summary, it was found that the interviewees have the knowledge and formed views regarding best practices in labor and childbirth, but repeatedly are unable to perform some actions that they recognize to be beneficial to the patients, facing obstacles and obstructions to the implementation of such good practices. Most of them report that there are possibilities and different paths to be followed, for instance, increasing the awareness of the medical staff via lectures and protocols, aiming to allow the implementation and enforcement of good practices during labor and childbirth. |
