| Abstract | In focusing mainly on the study of the great Atlantic ports to understand the relationship between early modern France and its colonies, particularly New France, historiography has neglected the hinterlands. As a result, the maritime economy remains imperfectly documented. The aim of this contribution is to measure the impact of colonial and maritime relations on the countryside inland from La Rochelle and Rochefort, along the Sèvre niortaise, and to assess their importance in the spatial organization of these territories. What we discover is not only a trade and transit area, but also a production and transformation platform dealing with New France. Migratory flows also contributed to these colonial exchanges: the region of Marans and the Sèvre axis were a recruiting and transit area for people who made their way to the other side of the Atlantic in the eighteenth century. |
