| Abstract | This paper focuses on the problem of lowland rice cultivation in Lower Casamance. The methodology is based on a photo interpretation and qualitative surveys. The region has important rainfall, hydrological, pedological and morphological conditions favorable to the development of agriculture and rice cultivation in particular. The characterization of rice valleys highlights the potential of 120 000 ha not yet exploited. Climate change like pluviometric variation, frequent droughts and other physical factors (salinization, siltation, etc.), are complemented by multiple human factors that contribute to the degradation of rice fields and to the decline in rice production. Strategies are then carried out by the actors concerned but remain insufficient. Sustainable solutions such as the attraction of private investors, the setting up of structuring infrastructures, the improvement of the supervision of farmers and the involvement of scientific research in order to innovate new varieties of rice and cultivation techniques adapted to the new social and climatic context are proposed. Key worlds: rice fields, lowland, climate change, cultivation, sustainable development. |
