| Abstract | This study lists, analyses and compares the effects of various resources for victims of violence that have been accessed by aboriginal women of Innu origin. The primary objective ofthis report is to answer the following question: Based on the experiences of Innu, victims of domestic violence who have used these resources, what are the effects on the dynamics and outcomes of the violence and on the women's safety and well-being? . The report draws on an analysis of ten statements collected in non-directed interviews with Innu women who suffered domestic. violence and used these resources. The theoretical framework chosen for the study is symbolic interactionism, and the analysis method is grounded theory. The study reveals the existence of three subgroups (1participants who no longer live in a violent environment and for whom the effects of violence have diminished; 2participants who no longer live in a violent environment but who continue to suffer effects from the violence they experienced;3participants who still live in a violent environment and who continue tosuffer extensive effects of violence). Within on these subgroups, we tried to determine why same women manage to extricate themselves successfully while others are less successful. Certain aspects of their sociodemographic and victimization profiles partly explain why they belong to one group or another. For example, most participants in the first subgroup were subject to psychological and physical violence at the hands oftheir husbands. Those in the second and third subgroups, however, were subject to these types of violence and had also suffered various types of sexual 'abuse. The members of the third group had experienced violence throughout' their childhoods and adult lives at the hands of several family members. , The women who make the best reèoveries tumed to informaI resources in the very early stages of the violence and: also generally called on traditional practices at the end of the'ir trajectory. Finally, it appears that the sociodemographic and victimization profiles greatly influence the strategies developed by the victims, their expectations, their choice of resources and how much they benefit from the resources. As such, the effectiveness of a particular resource cannot be analysed except in the context of the interaction between the victim and the type of support use4. |
