| Abstract | In this study, it was evaluated the characteristics of disc displacement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of patients indicated for adolescents Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), regarding the type and prevalence of disc displacement, gender distribution, affected side , click, crepitus, pain and range of mouth opening movement. The sample consisted of 72 subjects, aged 10 to 20 years (mean 16.7 ± 2.5 years), 51 females and 21 males, examined the period from May 2013 to November 2013. the scans were made in Signa Horizon (GE), the magnitude of the magnetic field of 1.5 T with a bilateral surface coil of 6.0 x 8.0 cm. The prevalence of disc displacement of the sample was 75%. More than half of patients with disc displacement (44 patients 61.1%) presented bilateral disc displacement. Disc displacements generally involved more in females. With respect to unilateral disc displacement, males were more frequently affected, while in bilateral disc displacement, females were more affected. Disk displacements with reduction of this condition showed an increase with advancing age. The sign / symptom of snapping strongly suggested the disc displacement with reduction. The disc displacement without reduction showed a direct relationship with limited mouth opening. What can be concluded from the study is that the disk shifts in adolescent patients has shown an increase in prevalence. There is a correlation between increasing age and the increase in the incidence of disc displacement in the adolescent population. |
