| Abstract | The analysis and the characterisation of the time-frequency of a real signal is often difficult. In order to simplify these representations, ridges or local energetic maxima are generally used. In this study, we propose an original approach, for the ridges extraction, based on an image processing method : active contours or “snakes” associated with the Gradient Vector Flow method as the external attraction force of the active contour. The GVF-snake method, applied on different time-frequency representations and for signals with different noise level, is robust compared to a classical method of signal processing. The execution time of our method is mainly dependant of the active contour length. Moreover, the extraction errors are relatively low, whatever the studied situation. This new approach has been also tested on time-frequency representations of uterine contractions recorded on monkey during gestation. The obtained extraction errors, on these real signals, were also better than the errors obtained with the classical method. |
