| Abstract | Objective: To describe the ESFA (European Smoking Prevention Framework Approach) Project and main sociodemographic and life stylehealth related variables in the experimental and control groups, at baseline. Population and methods: A study with 1952 Secondary 1 st grade schoolchildren was designed, belonging to 53 Barcelona schools, 16 of them in the experimental group (46 classrooms) and 37 in the control group (37 classrooms). Previously to the beginning of the intervention composed by actions in three levels (classroom, school environment and community area or district), a self-administrated questionnaire was administrated. Some information about sociodemographic variables, smoking behaviour and associated factors, and other health-related behaviours as alcohol and drugs consumption and physical activity was obtained. Results: Only 11.8% of schoolchildren reported smoking at baseline; from them 3.7% smoked regularly. The number of regular smokers was upper in the intervention group (4.7%) than in the control group (2.6%). Among the sociodemographic variables, significant differences were found in the socioeconomic level index and the type of school between the two groups. There wasn’t any other differences between the rest of studied variables. Conclusions: These results point out a low smoking consumption at baseline, and this moment can be considered optimal for the implementation of the ESFA Project strategies. The differences observed between the two cohorts of the study will have been taken in account when the interventions were evaluated. |
