| Abstract | INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) in HIV patients is a serious public health problem, due to the increase of TB morbidly and mortality in this population. Early diagnosis, adequate treatment and adherence can decrease this problem. These policies can only be implemented through public health strategies based on the knowledge of co-infection epidemiology in each region. OBJECTIVES: identify HIV infection prevalence in TB notified cases in Nova Iguacu health unities; describe socio-epidemiology and clinical data of study population; identify factors related to HIV infection in TB patients. METHODOLOGY: TB cases notified through standardized forms from Nova Iguacu city were analyzed between May 2006 and May 2008. Notified TB cases were divided in two groups: 1) HIV positive; 2) HIV negative. All information was registered in a database designed for this study (Epi-Data). Categorical variables were described by descriptive statistics (frequency, mean and median). Reasons associated to HIV infection were determined by univariate analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of HIV infection in this study was 4.7% (56 / 1204). Not to be alcoholic, not to be a new case and be male were associated to HIV infection. CONCLUSION: HIV infection in TB cases was similar to other studies with the same social and health characteristics population |
