| Abstract | In the present paper I attempt to outline the image that non-Gypsies carry about Gypsies in the economic, social, political and ‘transitional’ context of two post-communist Eastern-European countries. My point of departure is that while under state socialism the Gypsies mainly represented a deprived social stratum, in the new system they came to be defined as an ethnic group or a people. We shall see that these assumptions are so simplistic that they can hardly be considered valid at all. |
