| Abstract | This paper is about the relationship between organizational structure and strategies. It is a research in the area of organizations that focuses on the concept of strategy, structure and the different theoretical formulations resulting from research done in specialized literature. A case study was done to analyze the existence of the relationship of change and adequacy of one analytical category to another, which occurred in the Research Enterprise, Technical Assistance and Rural Extension of Mato Grosso do Sul, (Empresa de Pesquisa, Assistencia Tecnica e Extensao Rural de Mato Grosso do Sul – EMPAER-MS), during the period 1990 to 1998. According to the specifically stated aims, the strategies developed, during the given time, were characterized by way of Portfolio, Technology and Market Orientation variables. An organizational structure was characterized through variables related to Dispersal of Space, Decision Making Structure, and Administrative and Productive Capacity. The verification of the relationship of change and adequacy from one variable to another, was permitted by cross tabulating all the results of the data that was obtained and categorized. To analyze the process of change strategy, the influence of factors of cognitive institutiona l nature was used as background. The research was characterized as sectional with longitude evaluation, with the analysis of data being predominantly qualitative. The results obtained, showed evidence that the relationships between the strategies developed by the enterprise with its organizational structure are complementary. However, an organizational structure, inadequate in relation to the strategies, appeared in the examined period. Such a situation has been jeopardizing a better alignment of the enterprise to demands of the market. Finally, a collection of strategic measures, based on the results of the research, was elaborated for the enterprise that was researched. |
