| Abstract | This study investigated as has been used the textbook for teaching mathematics in the Decimal System numbers in a class of Year 2 of the 1st cycle of Basic Education of the Education Network of Recife. Vergnaud (1986, 1991, 1997) believes that the process of teaching and learning of mathematics should seek a variety of situations on the conceptual aspects and enable them to be represented in different ways in order to ensure a broader understanding . During the long process of teaching and learning Numbering Decimal System was related to the idea that children learn aspects of the system through the reproduction of numerical sequences. Various studies (NUNES and BRYANT, 1997; LERNER and SADOVSKY, 1996; CARRAHER, 1982, and others), however, have demonstrated that moments of reading, comparison, interpretation, writing and transaction numbers contribute to the understanding of the system. Considering the textbook of mathematics, has been observed progress, even though polls show that remains the same as defining the practice and teaching punctuate the difficulty of teachers to choose and use this feature (BELFORT, 2003; ROMANATTO, 2004). In the context of a qualitative approach to research, this study had as a teacher participant of the 2nd year of the 1st cycle of Basic Education Network Hall of Recife that made use of the textbook to teach mathematics to the numbering Decimal System. Data were collected from the analysis of the textbook used by Professor of Mathematics in class; of fourteen observations of classes in mathematics in addressing the numbering Decimal System and interviews with the searched teacher.
