| Abstract | TAVARES, V. H. Patient Safety in Intensive Care: Analysis of the Use of Physical Restraint. 2013.129 p. Thesis (Master) Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Brasilia, Brasilia, 2013. Enter the subject physical restraint to patient safety was the goal of this study, therefore, for some authors physical restraint may be used for the purpose of reducing the risk of injury and ensure safety, and to others, offers more risks than benefits. This study aimed to analyze the use of physical restraints on patients Intensive Care Unit . Exploratory, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, performed in an adult, public institution of education. Data collection was conducted in the period between July 19 and October 26, 2012, in the three periods of unit operation, the method of structured observation and data mining in medical records. Held non-random selection of participants in the study, criteria for inclusion and exclusion predetermined. Data collection was accepted operation after the patient or legal guardian, by signing the consent form. We used a structured instrument, with record variables related to socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, hospitalization, and the restriction of nursing care performed during physical restraint. The data bank was managed with the aid of Microsoft Excel 2007 software and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ® (SPSS version 18.0) and analyzed according to descriptive statistics. A total of 169 admissions to the ICU, 44 patients participated in the study, representing an incidence of 26% of patients restricted. There was a predominance of male patients (63.6%). The mean age was 55.17 years (SD = 18.29), 40.9% of the sample had completed elementary school. The majority (88.6%) lived with the family and had a family income of up to 1 minimum wage (36.4%). Of these, 43.2% were retired. These variables did not influence the indication of the restriction procedure. The average length of stay of patients confined in the unit, was 11.47 days (SD = 13.00), 43.2% of the sample received sedation. It found a high frequency of use of therapeutic devices (90.9%). Regarding the percentage of deaths stood at 40.9%, considered high, however, was not related to the use of physical restraint. Among the types of restriction performed, physics, alone, totaled 14 (31.8%) of cases, especially of the upper limbs (95.5%) in an average time of 2.57 days, employed, in full, without prescription. The verbal restriction was present in 40.9% of procedures. In 75% of cases, the patient was instructed as to restriction, justified primarily by agitation, but in 56.8% of cases the procedure was not recorded in the chart. The incidence of incidents / adverse events that affected the patients in the sample was 38.6%. Were nursing care provided to patients restricted in 90% of cases. We conclude that there is a significant frequency of use of physical restraint in the analyzed environment, however, the use of the procedure was safe and the ICU environment facilitates monitoring and the provision of adequate nursing care to the patient under physical restraint.
