| Abstract | An experiment was carried with the objective to test coconut fiber in combination with six organic materials and a commercial growing medium as substrates for the production of seedlings of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The experiment was conducted in a completely random design, with eight treatments and three replications, being the sampling unit four plants and treatments: coconut fiber mixed (1:1) with goat manure (EcFc), coffee pulp (PcFc) sugarcane bagasse (BcFc), filter press mud of sugarcane (CcFc), vermicompost (LbFc), river peat (TrFc), Promix® (PrFc) and Promix® (Pr). Pr was used as a control. All treatments presented greater percentage of total porosity than Pr, excepting TrFc and all exceeded Pr on porosity of aeration. Only in PcFc and EcFc, percentage of water retention was lesser than in Pr. In all substrates, pH and elctrical conductivity were higher than in Pr. CcFc surpassed Pr in percentage of organic matter. N, P and K were highly variable. The emergence percentage in all cases was lesser than in Pr. Seedlings of CcFc substrate showed greater height and dry matter content both in shoot and root, which is the reason why the CcFc may be an alternative substrate for the production of bell pepper seedlings. |
