| Abstract | L ike other U.S. districts, our district, Smithtown School District in New York, has complied with the Children’s Internet Protection Act that was passed in July 2001 and developed a code for the ethical and legal use of school computers. The act requires that schools and libraries that receive E-Rate subsidies implement filtering or blocking technology on all computers with Internet access. We have developed policies not only to limit students’ access to inappropriate material but also to ensure the safety and security of the students who use e-mail, chat rooms, and other inappropriate forms of electronic communication. All students review Smithtown’s Electronic Access Policy and Procedures and the district’s computer mission statement, and copies are mailed home to parents. Students receive individual log-on passwords that enable our technology staff membersto monitor students’ daily computer use. However, this policy only addresses school computers and we believe that it is our responsibility to take a proactive approach to address home use and avoid putting out the fires created by cyper-harassment. |
