| Abstract | The amount of non-linear and unbalanced loads connected to the electric power system is steadily growing. The power quality (i.e. the reliability of the energy supply and the quality of the voltage waveform) may be severely degraded, causing many unfavourable effects on the power system and the connected loads. Especially in the case of resonances, there can be a severe voltage distortion. In case of a resonance due to existing capacitor banks or cables, a damping technique is proposed through the application of resistive shunt harmonic impedances (SHI). These impedances can be implemented using active power electronic devices that synthesize a resistive load. Benefits : no need to measure the current, improved stability margin, ability to be effective for all harmonics |
