| Abstract | Understanding the interaction between human society and the possibilities and constraints off ered by the environment in which it develops, is a challenge that tests some of the foundations of anthropological thought. In this article we provide a set of hypotheses about the Andes as a stage for the life of pre European societies of Central Chile, with emphasis on the role played by the intermountain passes and its features as central places in transit. Our study concludes that, given its topography, the Maipo pass had a main role along the prehispanic sequence in a vast territory between the Aconcagua and Cachapoal rivers, as it facilitated the movement of goods and, especially, the social interaction that control that circulation. Th e Cristo Redentor Pass had relevance in the transit between both sides of the Andes only with the inka, according to the new regional sociopolitical situation. |
