| Abstract | The title of the book by D V Gadre Programming the Parallel Port does not do justice to its content. The book is in fact a comprehensive review of how the parallel port on PC hardware computers operates and how it can be used as an interface for data acquisition applications. Students and technicians in electronics having some programming skills in `C' language will find many examples of interesting (albeit nothing very new) hardware that can be built in any electronics workshop and the software (both listed and on a diskette) to run with it. The text is rather easy to read (except at times when it goes into excruciatingly small details), and there are plenty of good quality figures. On the other hand, advanced students and engineers may find this book too elementary and traditional. In particular, there is no discussion of the capabilities of the DMA parallel port, which is implemented in modern PC hardware, which could make the parallel port even more interesting as an interface.
