| Abstract | There is a growing need for broadband wireless communications and the requirements in terms of reliability as well as performance are high. Thèse Systems hâve to deal with a hostile propagation environment and this context makes the development of the latest technologies of wireless communications on the highest priorities of the designers. Multipath propagation, inter-user interférence, and imperfections of the communication equipment are among the most severe perturbations encountered throughout the signal path. A smart antenna is certainly a key component of such a system and its ability to adapt its spatial response is definitively a good solution, which can be used to mitigate ail thèse impairments. The smart antenna (also known as intelligent or adaptive array) is an antenna array which, by way of a feedback loop, adapts its radiation pattern in real time in order to optimize a criteria such as the signal to noise ratio, the signal to interférence ratio or the minimum mean squared error of the received signal. The performance of this antenna is affected by the corrélation between the signais at the antenna éléments, the algorithm used for the adaptation, and the unavoidable interférence usually présent in such a broadband environment. The EHF (Extremely High Frequency) band is under the current scope of possible frequencies that may be used for the 4 génération of wireless communication Systems. The EHF band frequencies exceed 30 GHz and this means wavelengths in the order of a few millimeters. Large frequency bandwidths are available for this band at the expense of a significantly more difncult propagation. An ambitious project which consists in the design and realization of a wideband millimeter-wave smart antenna is currently underway and the work presented hère is a part of it. This antenna will definitely be a fondamental élément of a communication system achieving a good performance even though the wireless link is affected by ail kinds of channel induced perturbations. The achieved system will be able to provide an improved link quality to its multiple users by using the latest technological enhancements. Possible applications of this concept include wireless local area networks and video distribution. |
