| Abstract | Only one third of those patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who received dialysis treatment in Croatia are registered on the waiting list for a cadaveric kidney trans- plant. For majority of patients transplantation is not possible because of various contraindi- cations. The main reason is a steadily growing age and therefore higher incidence of cardio- vascular disease and diabetes. Before including patients in the waiting list, potential kidney transplant recipients should undergo a rigorous selection and evaluation. It is necessary to treat concomitant diseases which can influence patient's and transplant's survival. After in- cluding patients on waiting list, it is obligatory to evaluate them and look for potential con- traindications. In that case they have to be temporarily or permanently removed from the waiting list. |
