| Abstract | Previous research has shown that precise numbers (e.g., 365,564) are judged to be smaller than round numbers of comparable magnitude (e.g., 365,000). In this research, we suggest that this precision effect manifests because precise numbers are less fluent than round numbers. The subjective experience created by disfluency influences peoples’ confidence in their evaluation of precise numbers. We report results from two studies that test this hypothesis. |
