| Abstract | It is known that the existence of labor laws in Brazilian cities during the years of the Getulio Vargas administration and their inexistence in rural areas generated migrations from the hinterland to the cities (Gomes, 2005, p. 240-241). This article discusses, through the methodology of oral history, how this process was experienced by descendants of slaves from the rural area of the town of Osorio who, in the search for new prospects for their lives, moved to cities such as Osorio, Capao da Canoa and Porto Alegre. The article investigates what reasons beside the labor legislation led them to the cities and also asks about their occupations once they were living in urban areas. Key words: migrations, labor laws, littoral of Rio Grande do Sul, descendants of slaves. |
