| Abstract | A survey of the Nucella lapillus populations around South-East England in November 1987 revealed imposex to be well developed in all areas. Population abundance of N. lapillus appeared unaffected at few localities; generally the syndrome was sufficiently advanced to cause sterility and population decline, notably in the Brighton-Newhaven area. The worst affected region appeared to be North Kent where the species was found to have disappeared entirely. TBT pollution, a well established cause of imposex, was found to be extensive (0.7-39 ng Sn/l in subsurface water samples); its impact on the abundance of N. lapillus in the region has been considerable. |
