| Abstract | The article presents evolution of scientific metrology that results both from the fast progress of science (e.g., the use of quantum standards) and the increasing demand for measurements at the highest metrological level (e.g., measurements of time in the global navigation satellite systems, GNSS). The measurement methods and general procedures for processing raw experimental data, which were developed in metrology, are being employed in the ever increasing number of fields (e.g., in chemistry, biology, pharmacology and medicine). The contemporary trends in scientific metrology, and particularly the forthcoming reform of the international system of units SI, imply a change of priorities stated in the Metric Convention and affect the role, which the BIPM plays in the global metrological infrastructure. |
