| Abstract | This paper describes a pilot study which investigated the potential for using Sound Therapy with children with autism. Sound Therapy is a new approach which has been developed for children who have a range of disabilities, from severe learning difficulties to profound and multiple handicaps. It focuses on the inner world of the child through aesthetic resonation with sound. A development of this therapy has also been used successfully with the elderly frail and mentally infirm. Following a two-year case study of one child with autistic tendencies, the techniques of Sound Therapy are described together with the design of a research tool to provide rigorous evaluation of the methodology from the perspectives of education and developmental psychology. The experience of a pilot study in the Kuwait Autistic Centre is summarised, and the paper concludes with future plans to further develop the therapy for children with autism. |
