| Abstract | This paper is an attempt to delimit the disjunctive scope among three types of question forms in Mandarin Chinese. It is argued that the disjunctive scope is targeted at different layers: vP/VP for A-not-A questions, TP/IP for alternative questions, and CP for VP-VP questions. The tripartite distinction is supported by three di fferent patterns with respect to the licensing of wh -indefinites. In A-not-A questions, only object wh -indefinites can be licensed; in alternative questi ons, both subject and object wh -indefinites can be licensed; in VP-VP questions, wh -indefinites in any position cannot be licensed. |
