| Abstract | Low literacy users have very different information search and retrieval strategies in comparison with high literacy users. Their search strategies are significantly less efficient and are more prone to errors and oversights. One of the design concepts we are investigating is that of visualisation of the search process, rather than a view of the data space. So, instead of the more common list of list views typified by the returns from a Google search, we proposed an alternative, non-traditional visualisation that is based on the metaphor of index cards laid out on a tabletop. As an electronic representation, it has been imbued with a variety of functions not easily carried out in the physical world, e.g. the ease with which to identify commonalities amongst the cards. We also propose a conceptual framework for reasoning about the design and its translation into a user interface. The interface is based on the use of interactive visualisation that is supported by smart algorithms and data analysis tools. The interface design was originally designed for use in electronic library systems for searching and retrieving scholarly and scientific publications, and we would like to transpose its design for use by low literate users, and to investigate how well it works for them.
