Abstract	In 1511, the celebrated German artist Albrecht Durer (1471—1528) completed a series of 20 woodcuts entitled The Life of the Virgin. Published in the form of a book, these woodcuts included a remarkable image of The Birth of the Virgin. For the art historian this woodcut illustrates Durer's technical mastery combined with his powers of narrative invention.
