| Abstract | The growing use of online social networks has caused users to share detailed information abouttheplacestheyvisit,resultingonaclearconnectionbetweenthephysicalworld(i.e. the movement of these users on the globe) and the virtual world (which they express about these movementsinthesocialnetwork). Thefunctionalityresponsible forsharinglocationbyusersis named as “check in”. In a social network with this feature, any user can publish their visited places. Thisthesispresentsnewapproachesforonlinesocialnetworksanalysisconsideringthe social,spatialandtemporaldimensionsthatareimplicitinthepublicationofuserscheck-ins. Social, spatial and temporal information is defined from the perspective of “user encounters”, which is the study object of this thesis. Users encounters occur when two people (social dimension)aresomewhere(spatialdimension)inagiventime(temporaldimension)anddecide topublishthismeetingthroughcheck-ins. Inadditiontothealgorithmpresentedforencounters detection, wealsodefinedamodelforrepresentationoftheseencounters. Thismodeliscalled asSiST(SocIal,SpatialandTemporal). The SiSTmodelbasicallyrepresentencounters bya graphstructure. Tovalidatetheproposedapproach, weusedrealdatafromonlinesocialnetworks. Withthese data the users encounters were detected and analyzed from different perspectives aiming at investigatingtheexistenceofanylawgoverningthepublicationofencountersandalsotoidentify patternsrelatedtoitsoccurrence, liketemporalpatterns, forexample.
