| Abstract | The water availability on watersheds is highly connected with its hydrological response to the climatic local dynamic. The present studyassessthe correlation between the climate variables (solar radiation, temperature and precipitation) and the water balance behavior on the upper Negro river basin. The study area consists of a hydrological basin provided with a school catchment network, were several others hydrological studies were developed, with special focus on natural disasters. This watershed is located in the Santa Catarina and Parana states, between latitudes 25°55’73’’S and 26°14’17’’S, and between longitudes 48°56’34’’W and 49°23’12’’W, and the climate is subtropical humid. A temporal analysis was performed with historical databases from climate and hydrological variables. Precipitation behavior was also spatially analyzed through interpolation methods. In order to define the most accurate method to be applied on the study area, the performance ofthe following interpolation methods were compared: Spline, Thiessen, inverse of the distance’s weight (IDW) and kriging methods (ordinary kriging, Empirical Bayesian kriging and ordinary cokriging) for the annual precipitation averagein the upper Negro river watershed. The kriging methods showed the smaller errors, being the Bayesian ordinary kriging method the more precise one. The Spline method presented the second worse results, being the Thiessen estimations the method with the highest mean square error, although it is not a method used for spatial estimations, but for mean precipitation estimations in watersheds. Climate and hydrological variables behavior was studied in order to estimate the mean annual water balance, and to assess the water balance from specially dry and rainy years. The water balance assessment was made with the water budget equation and by the seasonal water budget method developed by Kan (2005). The average value for the annual water balance was 1452 mm.year precipitation, 616 mm.yearstreamflow and 829 mm.year for evapotranspiration estimated by Kan's method. The driest year had a 960 mm.year precipitation, 247 mm.yearstreamflow and 661 mm.year evapotranspirationestimated by the seasonal method. The substantial amount of water lost by evapotranspiration in the basin made clear its importance on the water management, especially on years of drought. In the study of the correlation between the climate variables and water balance, no clear relationship was determined. |
