| Abstract | Current educational policies strongly encourage the use of computer technologies (browsers, multimedia applications...) as means to develop such abili- ties in pupils. However information search is a complex process which requires both problem-solving and decision making abilities. In this article, we examine the cognitive and developmental issues of information search in the context of new information technologies. We report a preliminary study whose aim was to find out how pupils choose and select relevant book references according to an assigned topic. The results show that younger learners tend to assign relevance based on visual cues (capitals, boldface type...) rather than on the semantic relation between the reference and the assigned topic. Implications for further investigations are discussed. |
