Abstract	The application of new maintenance approaches related with operational reliability improvement and its elements is a necessity for all enterprises that intend to increase efficiency indicators. The rotating machines studied in this paper belong to an important plant that extracts oil from African palm tree fruits. These machines are submitted, in theory, to a preventive maintenance program, but actually the most of maintenance activities are reactive. An analysis in order to identify functions, functional failures, failure modes and failure effects was made. Maintenance tasks for assuring the continuity of functions were also identified and concentred in a proposal with a very proactive trend.
