Abstract	The article focuses on the discourse of youth generations that has been present in social sciences and humanities for at least four decades. Youth began to be distinguished as a social phenomenon in the midsixties, constituting a separate Teilkultur. The article outlines the range of macro-sociological approaches (Parsons, Eisenstadt, Habermas) to undersanding youth as a separate life phase and a time when „individual history meets the History” (Kloskowska, 1987). At the same time the article presents the general overview of the philosophical (Ortega y Gasset), sociological (Mannheim) and anthropological (Mead) perspectives on the problem of generations. Last but not least, the article raises some controversies and disagreements about the notion of generation, such as too broad scope, the creation through media and the “marketization” of the generations.
