| Abstract | AN EXAMINATION OF PLAY SCHEMES TO TEACH CHILDREN WITH AUTISM USING NATURALISTIC TEACHING STRATEGIES The current study compared the use of naturalistic teaching methods within a play scheme to promote initiations and generalization skills among children with autism. There are four play conditions (specific play opportunity SPO, specific play timed SPT, unstructured play opportunity UPO, and unstructured play timed UPT). SPO condition used play schemes to teach multiple targets within 15 opportunities presented per session. A play scheme, any toy with multiple elements (a carwash) or a theme (princesses), was utilized. The play schemes used were vehicles and books & puzzles. SPT condition had all the same aspects of SPO, except instead of providing 15 opportunities, the session was defined by 15 minute timed sessions. UPO condition, target skills were taught using naturalistic teaching methodologies. In the UPT condition, target skills were taught using the same combination described in the UPO except the session consisted of 15 minute timed sessions. A multiple-baseline with an embedded alternating treatments across participants design was used. The results demonstrate that the use of play schemes within a naturalistic environment increased initiations with two participants within both the timed and opportunity conditions. Generalization probes were done for each participant following the study. |
