| Abstract | The high data rates employed by WDM transparent optical networks make them most suitable for today’s growing network traffic demands. However, their transparency imposes several vulnerabilities in network security, enabling malicious signals to propagate from the source to other parts of the network without losing their attacking capabilities. Furthermore, detecting, locating the source and localizing the spreading of such physical-layer attacks is more difficult since monitoring must be performed in the optical domain. Most failure and attack management approaches are reactive and focus on network recovery after a fault or an attack has already occurred. Recently, novel, prevention-oriented safety strategies have been proposed to aid attack localization and source identification in the planning phase. This paper provides a summary of optical network component vulnerabilities which can be exploited to perform attacks to the proper functioning of the network and a description of known methods of such attacks. Furthermore, it gives an overview of network planning approaches which deal with the physical-layer security issues in transparent optical networks and emphasises the need for new, preventive strategies for increasing safety in transparent optical networks. |
