| Abstract | Breastmilk Banks are specialized units in collecting, processing and storing donated breastmilk to provide human milk to those newborns who need it. Is considered the food of choice in the first six months of life, prolonging it if it is feasible, until two years old. When it is not posible for the neonate to recieve his mother ́s milk, or it is not enough, donated breastmilk is the best alternative. The benefits of human milk are throughly demonstrated. It contains all those nutrients and protective factors necessary for better tolerance, protection against intestinal problems, infections, an increased survival and a better development of the newborn. Milk banks are sustained thanks to milk excess donated by mothers who are breastfeeding their children, and that is why it is considered a very important social service. The role of nursing in the recruitment of milk donors is fundamental, since although the functioning of these in Spain began in 2001 and the benefits have been remarkable, there are many territories at national level still do not have this service. |
