| Abstract | It focuses the importance of using measurement instruments to evaluate information units and services. It conceptualizes and focuses the use of performance indicators, from the viewpoint of a user-centered approach, as auxiliary tool in decision taking and in quality management. It comments documents that deal with performance indicators concerning traditional and digital libraries, among which International Standards ISO 11620, ISO 20983 and the Equinox Project, presenting them as basic tools for the formation and selection of indicators. It concludes, suggesting the use of performance indicators for evaluation, decision taking and quality management. It recommends their use in information units and services, as well as the promotion of actions aiming to motivate research and governmental agencies to adopt them, and also the inclusion of studies on the subject in graduate courses in the field of Information Science, in the process of developing competence in information. |
