| Abstract | The industrial and municipal wastewaters of the industrial park at Cuernavaca's Valley in the State of Morelos, Mexico, are treated by an activated-sludge plant. The treated efiiuent is used to irrigate cultivated lands. The plant produces 20 tons of sewage sludges (20% wt) daily. During the last decade they have been dumped in the surroundings. Nowadays, and due to the neighbor's complaints, the sludges are disposed in a landfill located in the western portion of the state. The site does not comply with the Mexican regulations and there is a risk of groundwater pollution. The aim of this paper is to characterize the sludges and propose their use as soil amendrnent. The analysis were done by X-ray fluorescence, emission spectroscopy, electronic microscopy, Dame atornic absorption and UV-visible fluorescence. Microbiological analysis were also carried out. The results showed that the sludges contained a high concentration of organic matter and macro and micro nutrients. Only 1 to 10% of the total concentration of toxic elements were are present as soluble species. Pathogens were also found. Toxic metal accumulation and pathogens dispersion can be avoided by composting the sludges and controlling their application rates. A formula to estimate the optimum sludge doses is presented. |
