| Abstract | This dissertation describes a research study that explored the communication dynamic that occurs between Denver (Colorado) police officers and citizens of the African-American community. The author defines a condition known as "Driving While Black," as part of the hypothesis. The study consisted of 34 interviews which resulted in transcribed narratives. These narratives were then examined through the use of narrative analysis and various theoretical frameworks. The author described a new perspective of visualizing the communication between police officers and citizens as a result of these analytic techniques. A brief section outlines how this research can serve as a foundation for additional communication research of the dynamic between police officers and the African-American community. |
