| Abstract | STRENGTHENING TIES WITH TIMOR-LESTE 29 April 2014 Chief Minister Adam Giles is on his way to Timor-Leste for official meetings with the country’s President and Prime Minister about strengthening relations with the Northern Territory. “I am excited to be returning to Timor-Leste on my second official visit there as Chief Minister and I look forward to discussing economic development opportunities that might be pursued as part of the Territory’s push for Northern Australia Development,” Mr Giles said. “Strategic relationships with our northern neighbours have never been more important to the Territory’s future and I am committed to pursuing economic development that benefits both jurisdictions. “This visit will provide an important chance to speak to both President Taur Matan Ruak and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao about the development of a trilateral agreement between Timor-Leste, eastern Indonesia and the Northern Territory. “This is something I have discussed with the President previously and I am keen to see this initiative progress as a priority for our region. “While I am in Dili, I will also receive an update on Timor-Leste’s imminent plans to establish the country’s first Consulate in Darwin. “This will be an important step in cementing diplomatic and trade ties between our two jurisdictions and reflects the strength of our growing relationship.” Mr Giles will be in Dili for two days and will also present certificates to 20 seasonal workers from Timor-Leste who are about to head to the Territory for six months to work in the Katherine region. “These workers have just completed a vocational training course preparing them for work in the Territory,” Mr Giles said. “They will be the first seasonal workers from Timor-Leste to work in the Northern Territory as part of the Australian Government’s Seasonal Worker Program.” The workers will be picking melons with a Katherine-based company called Red Dirt Melons and are being sponsored by Connect Group Australia which is based in Melbourne. “As the Territory grows and develops, the need for workers will only expand. Programs like this are crucial to creating the workforce we need to develop Northern Australia,” Mr Giles said. “I look forward to welcoming these workers to the Territory for their six month stay starting in May.” |
