| Abstract | In Brazil, the extraction of ornamental rocks, as marble, expressively grows to attend the demand of civil construction and exportations. Residues from marble extraction causes negative environmental impacts create, for instance, problems in water streams, siltation, lack of oxygen, high turbidity and, consequently, damaging the region’s fauna and flora. It can also create an unpleasant visual pollution. Applying the process of extrusion, composites made of polypropylene (PP) and marble residues were manufactured. The goal of this project is to evaluate the mechanical (impact and flexure resistances) and weather agents exposure (cyclic salt fog, humidity and UV rays) properties of these composites. The percent of marble residues mixed to polypropylene matrix were: 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70%. Preliminary experiments indicated an accentuated increase of resistance regarding weather agents exposure properties, as well as a significant enhancement in the impact and flexure resistances; compared to pure PP. These results endorse the viability of utilization of composites made of marble residues and polypropylene. As applications in ecological and economical viable products, it can be quoted, flooring, brakes for parked cars and airplaines, bricks, fences, tables, benches, hand rails etc. |
