| Abstract | The region of Serra do Cipó, the southern part of the Serra do Espinhaço, is an ecotone between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. It is one of the richest high-altitude rocky vegetations in Brazil. Vast natural grasslands are found in the higher parts, interspersed with rocky outcrops of quartzite and forest formations. This study aims to characterize primary soil sequences underlying the high-altitude rocky vegetation of Serra do Cipó with different lithologies and vegetation types, and describe soil-vegetation relationships of the area, based on the study of gradients from high-altitude grassland to two "capões de mata" (forest islands within the natural grassland) in the region of “Alto Palácio”, in the National Park “Serra do Cipó”, (Parna-Cipó) and in an area of environmental protection “Morro da Pedreira”. The soils, regardless of the geological matrix, the depth profile and vegetation growing on them, have high levels of organic matter, are acidic, nutrient-poor and rich in aluminum. The formation of "capões de mata" is related to the soil chemical and physical properties and the greater availability of water in the eastern part of the Serra. In sandy soils the sand fraction consists of about 80% very fine sand (0.106 to 0.053 mm), which plays an important role in the water holding capacity of these environments. Besides the soil physical properties, facilitating the development of forest vegetation, the results obtained here showed that the soils under forest are slightly less nutrient-poor than the soils under grassland. In environments less disturbed by human action, the vegetation gradient follows the soil gradient. As the soil becomes deeper, the vegetation becomes denser and higher. |
