| Abstract | Spondyloarthritis (SpA) are a group of chronic diseases that can lead to structural damage during disease progression, which in turn produces disability and impairs quality of life. Several imaging techniques are available that may help to evaluate structural damage, such as plain-film radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance. However, clinicians must bear in mind a series of questions when indicating and assessing these procedures. First, there are various types of structural lesions, which also change depending on the type of SpA and may differ depending on the type of joint involved. Second, each imaging technique has particular characteristics making it highly sensitive and specific for one type of lesion but not for others. Third, some of these techniques are currently in the validation phase. Detailed knowledge of all these questions will help to indicate the imaging technique to be used in order to assess and monitor structural damage in SpA more efficiently. © 2019 Sociedad Española de Reumatología.
